How-to Recipe: Charcoal Seed Crackers with Pea Avo Smash by La Pachamama Organic

Baking your own crackers is easy and fun. And it’s the only way to ensure you only get the good stuff and none of the chemicals, conservatives or additives.

Instead, you can give your crackers superpowers by adding your favourite super foods. In this case we have added activated charcoal to our crackers, which is an amazing plant-based ingredient known for its detoxifying properties.

Bonus points for the intense black colour, which makes all toppings pop!

Charcoal Seed Crackers

  • 60g almond flour (2.12 oz)
  • 80g brown rice flour (2.82 oz)
  • 30g hemp seeds (1.06 oz)
  • 12g ground flaxseeds (0.42 oz)
  • 30g black sesame seed (1.06 oz)
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon activated charcoal powder
  • 15ml olive oil (0.51 fl oz)
  • 70ml water (2.37 fl oz)


  1. Combine all dry ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Add oil and water and mix to incorporate with a rubber spatula.
  2. Wrap dough in plastic and chill for 1 hour.
  3. Roll chilled dough between baking paper to 3 mm thickness.
  4. Cut the dough into rectangles and place on a baking paper-lined baking tray.
  5. Bake at 180 ºC until crisp, 10–15 minutes. Cool down completely before use. Store in an airtight container up to 3 days.

Green Pea Avo Smash

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 100g green peas (fresh or frozen) (3.53 oz)
  • juice of ½ a lemon
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 small garlic clove, crushed salt and pepper
  • handful of fresh dill herb (basil or mint also work well)
  1. Blanch the peas by cooking them for 30 seconds in boiling water. Then immediately drain them and quickly run them under a cold tap. Let them cool off completely.
  2. Add the peas to a mixing bowl together with the avocado, lemon juice, garlic and salt. Mash with a fork or pulse with a handheld immersion blender. Try to keep it slightly chunky, rather than pureeing into baby food.
  3. Roughly chop the herbs and mix into the pea mixture.
